Safe use of insulin

Injecting insulin with a syringe

Information

Drawing insulin into a syringe to the correct dose with no air requires dexterity, concentration, good vision and a steady hand.

  • Check insulin is in date
  • Clean bung with alcohol swab
  • Attach needle to syringe if necessary
  • Gently rotate bottle to mix cloudy insulins
  • Hold vial upside down
  • Draw up air and inject into the insulin vial
  • Draw up insulin into syringe
  • Clear air bubbles from syringe
  • Check syringe contains correct insulin dose
  • Inject insulin into fatty layer under skin
  • Count to 10
  • Withdraw needle
  • Press on the hole – do not massage the site.
