Best screening or early detection initiative

This award recognises the impact of early detection of type 2 diabetes in the management and prevention of longer term complications which can be devastating to patients, and represent a huge cost burden to the health service.

Winner: Self assessment tool by University Hospitals of Leicester

The Leicester team developed a suite of tools for the detection of type 2 diabetes in people who are at “high risk”. The self-assessment score (developed in collaboration with Diabetes UK) is the first questionnaire-based tool developed for use within a multi-ethnic UK population. It has already received global recognition, having been completed by over 91,000 people. The Leicester Practice Risk score is an automated tool for ranking individuals at risk within a GP practice so that they can be targeted with screening strategies. For more details see our QiC case study for 'Self assessment tool by University Hospitals of Leicester'.
