NHS Diabetes guidance featured in a renowned journal
Guidance to improve diabetes perioperative care published by NHS Diabetes has been featured in a second renowned journal.
The national guidelines were released by NHS Diabetes at the Diabetes UK APC last year in an attempt to raise the standards of care for people with diabetes undergoing operative or investigative procedures requiring a period without food.
The full guidance, titled Management of adults with diabetes undergoing surgery and elective procedures: improving standards, was featured on the website of Diabetic Medicine on January 31st and will soon be published in the printed version of the monthly journal published by Diabetes UK. An abstract is available for free but only members or those with institutional rights can access the full version.
One of the authors Dr Ketan Dhatariya, a consultant in diabetes at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, said: “This is great recognition because Diabetic Medicine is a highly respected journal in the world of clinical diabetes.”
An extract of the publication was also published in the Oxford Textbook of Medicine Online in the autumn and it is due to be published in more journals.
Also, there will soon be an edition of the guideline published as a stand-alone document by the Association of Surgeons of GB and Ireland, called Issues in Professional Practice.
The NHS Diabetes guidance covers all stages of the patient pathway from primary care referral to surgical outpatients, pre-operative assessment, hospital admission, surgery, post-operative care and discharge.
