Launching the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit – an article featured in BMA News

When Gerry Rayman first proposed an NHS-wide audit of care for inpatients with diabetes, he was greeted with some scepticism. ‘The general feeling was that it would never happen,’ recalls the consultant physician and NHS Diabetes national clinical lead for inpatient care.

‘I was told it was too big a task, that staff were too busy,’ he says. ‘People said I would be lucky to get 30 hospitals involved.’ 

Undaunted, and with the support of national director of diabetes Rowan Hillson and NHS Diabetes director Anna Morton, Dr Rayman began a drive to recruit participants. It involved tactics more generally associated with marketing than with healthcare audit.
