Information

National Diabetes Information Service (NDIS)

NDIS has been established to provide a comprehensive range of diabetes data, tools and information via one web portal. It uses all currently available diabetes information sources to provide people with diabetes, providers of diabetes care and health commissioners, with information to aid decision making and improve services.

NDIS is currently run and hosted by Diabetes Health Intelligence which is a strategic programme within Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Observatory.

Background

The development and establishment of NDIS has been funded by NHS Diabetes since 2007 and we have worked in partnership with a range of organisations to draw on a vast range of diabetes knowledge and expertise that ensures that NDIS meets the needs of the service. The impetus for its establishment resulted from a listening exercise in 2007 that identified that whilst a large amount of diabetes information existed, health professionals were unsure where to find it all. An overview and analysis of the listening exercise was completed.

NDIS Partnership Board

NDIS is run as a partnership and strategic direction is set by the NDIS Partnership Board chaired by Dr Rowan Hillson MBE, the National Clinical Director for Diabetes. The board consists of all the key diabetes stakeholders and meets three times a year.

Expert Reference Group

Underpinning the work of NDIS is an expert reference group (ERG) who assist with the development of tools and products. This group comprises healthcare professionals and diabetes service users. If you would like to participate in this group please email info@diabetes-ndis.org.

Key people

  • Dr Rowan Hillson, National Clinical Director for Diabetes – chair of the NDIS Partnership Board
  • Dr Bob Young – NDIS Clinical lead
  • Lorraine Oldridge – transition lead for NDIS

GP Tool - NDIS is developing diabetes specific reports for general practices using:

  • The latest National Diabetes Audit (NDA)
  • Hospital Episode Statistics (HES)
  • Prescribing data

The reports comprise:

  • Comparison of outcomes of diabetes care
  • An ability for GPs to pool their own reports with those of partners
  • Benchmarking against external (anonymised) GPs, practices or consortia

The tool has been completed and is waiting for the release of the data.
