Diabetes Patient Experience Survey Tool
Measuring patient experience is essential within the NHS in order to empower patients and ensure the services provided are patient focused.
Purpose
The purpose of these pages is to provide a step by step guide to collecting patient experience information from people who have diabetes in a variety of clinical settings.
Background to the Diabetes Patient Experience project
NHS Diabetes and the NHS Information Centre for health and social care commissioned Picker Institute Europe to design and test a questionnaire of people who have diabetes, with particular emphasis on how involved people were in their care and how well NHS healthcare staff empower them to manage their condition.
The project also assessed three methods of collecting these responses with the aim of being able to suggest the optimum method depending on which patient groups were being targeted.
This research project began in July 2008 and fieldwork was concluded in October 2009. Questionnaire content was developed from stakeholder engagement, focus groups of people with diabetes and the expertise of the working group for this project. The questions and response options were further refined using cognitive interviews with people with diabetes and piloted using the three methodologies in primary and secondary care clinics.
The outcomes of this research were a full report and guidance on which this tool has been based.
