Regional guidance

South West paediatric diabetes network

“Diabetes is a serious lifelong condition with the potential for complications later in life. Type 1 diabetes is increasing in children of all ages, but particularly the under 5s, and it is vital that we do all we can to help them manage the condition as early as possible to help prevent them suffering the awful complications in later life that can result from poor management” - Dr Julian Cox, Chair of the South West Paediatric Diabetes Network.

Who we are

The South West Paediatric Diabetes Network (SWPDN) is made up of consultants, paediatric diabetes specialist nurses (PDSNs), commissioners, dietitians, psychologists, programme managers, operational managers and Diabetes UK.

The network is supported by NHS Diabetes who funds the coordinator role and current work on the Health Needs Assessment including Patient Taking groups and survey.  NHS Diabetes also enables the regional clinical leads to meet as part of a national network which provides valuable input to the development of paediatric services both nationally and locally.

Where we are

The SWPDN covers 11 Paediatric Diabetes Units in the South West, stretching from Gloucestershire in the north to Yeovil in the east and down to the tip of Cornwall in the west.

Patients

Paediatric Diabetes is on the increase.  Nationally there is thought to be 23,000 children with Diabetes in England and 2,300 of these are found in the South West region.

Project Groups

The network has established 8 Project Groups to help move forward certain priorities.  The Project Groups are:

  • Service specification
  • Out of hours
  • Structured education
  • Schools
  • Transition
  • Dietetics
  • Guideline development
  • Additionally a patient/parent/carer panel will be established to encourage user engagement and help to shape the paediatric diabetes service in the South West.
