Brief description of unit
Our aims
To provide a high quality service for all children with type 1 and 2 diabetes and all other rare forms of type 3 diabetes.
How the the service works
For type 1 diabetes we see all children from Sheffield and difficult cases from other areas. We have a special interest (research and clinical) in diabetes education. For type 2 and other forms of diabetes we provide a tertiary diagnostic and management service. Also there is an active research programme in type 2 diabetes and one of the commonest forms of type 3 diabetes (Cystic Fibrosis Related, CFRD).
The one full-time and three part-time consultants with an accredited interest in Diabetes run an advice rota. There is a speciality Specialist Registrar to deal with day-to-day issues. There are two Diabetes Specialist Nurses who educate and instigate therapy at home then maintain support. There is a part-time dietician who gives advice on the day of diagnosis when possible and as soon as possible after diagnosis in all cases.
Ongoing support is provided at clinic by the dietician who can provide telephone advice but not community based care. There is a weekly diabetes out-patients department alternating between Northern General Hospital and Sheffield Children's Hospital. There are special education clinics arranged by the Diabetes Specialist Nurses and an annual education camp for selected patients.
There is a separate adolescent clinic which offers joint care with the paediatric and adult service for 15 to 20 years of age or end of full time education. Monthly clinics at held at both the Northern General Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital. There is limited access to psychology services.
