Brief description of unit
The service provides care for 176 children and young people in weekly, age banded consultant clinics with 3 monthly appointments (a weekly clinic on each site plus additional nurse-led clinics). Patients are managed with a range of insulin regimes including twice daily (15%), thrice daily (7%) multiple doses (49%) and insulin pumps (28%). We have a small number of T2D. HbA1c is available at each visit. Transition clinics, jointly with the adult team, are offered from about 16 years of age and teenagers will usually be admitted to the adolescent in patient unit at Pinderfields up to 18 years of age. We have access to CAMHS. An out of hours pager is used to provide specialist advice 7 days a week until 8 pm and patients can contact the ward paediatric team for advice overnight. Off site activities are undertaken with all age groups. About 10 have child protection plans. We have intranet protocols for DKA, new diagnosis, hypoglycaemia, managing intercurrent illness, type 2 diabetes and also guidelines for GPs. There is a parent support group and an annual diabetes education day for nurses.
