Brief description of unit

The Leeds Children’s Hospital Centre for Children and Young People with Diabetes is currently based at Seacroft Hospital but will move to its own centre within the Leeds Children’s Hospital Outpatient Department at St James’s University Hospital in April 2011.

All the outpatient and administrative work of the Children and Young Peoples Diabetes Team will take place there.  The centre will consist of offices for the 2 Consultants along with the 4.2 WTE Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, 1 WTE paediatric dietician specialising in diabetes, 0.4 WTE paediatric psychologist and the team’s secretarial and administrative support.

At present 370 children with Type 1, Type 2, MODY and diabetes secondary to other conditions are seen in the diabetes centre. Patients and their families come from Leeds, the Yorkshire Region and Supra-regionally. The patients range in age from a few months old to over 18 years.

Transition clinics for 16 -18 yr olds are held in the Manny Cussins Diabetes Centre at St James’s University Hospital. Facilities are being developed for a ‘Learning Centre’ for Children with Diabetes with regular courses and updates for parents, children and teenagers on different aspects of diabetes management.

The inpatient management of all children with diabetes takes place in a specifically designated ward (Ward 51) at the Leeds Children’s Hospital, LGI. The Children and Young Peoples Diabetes Team have a specific interest in Insulin Pump Therapy, Continuous Glucose Monitoring, MODY and all educational aspects of diabetes management.
