Brief description of unit

The Diabetes Team in Grimsby is part of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Team consists of a Consultant Paediatrician, 2 Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Dietician, Play Specialist and Podiatrist.  We refer into Psychiatry and Psychology services as required for individual children, young people and their families.

We cover a large geographical rural area, from Grimsby, Cleethorpes and surrounding villages within and up to the borders of Hull, Scunthorpe, Lincoln and Boston.

We care for approximately 120-150 children and young people up to the age of 20 years. We undertake structured education, support and coordinate the management of children, young people and their families in hospital, at clinics, in schools and at home.

We have four diabetes clinics per calendar month, in addition to a separate pump clinic. Our clinics are age banded, 0-9yrs old, 10-12yrs old, 13-15 years.  In addition to these clinics, we also run a transition clinic for young people over the age of 16 years.  The transition clinic is supported by an Adult Diabetologist, Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Dietician. All children and young people are offered a minimum of four clinic appointments per year.
