Brief description of unit
The Bradford Unit supports up to 180 patients aged up to 18 years old living in the area. Although the majority of our population have Type 1 diabetes the area has a large south Asian population with a high incidence of Type 2 diabetes, which is reflected in our case load. We have an increasing incidence of children with diabetes associated conditions such as Alstroms, Roger’s, Lipodystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis and post organ transplant. The majority of children and young people with Type 1 diabetes are on a multiple daily injection insulin regimen however, we also offer pump therapy. The service offers weekly clinics for our younger patients and monthly clinics for our older teenagers at St Luke’s Hospital. We also provide a transition clinic with our adult colleagues in the diabetes centre at the Bradford Royal Infirmary four times a year. The service provides education and support to children and their families at home and in school.
