Brief description of unit
The Diabetes team at Barnsley is made up of, the Consultant Paediatrician, 2.5 whole time Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Dietician, and at annual review there is also input from podiatry and eye screening staff.
The team currently look after approximately 100 children with diabetes under 16 years, and 80 young people between the ages of 16 – 22 who are seen in the Young Adult Clinic. Approximately 20 children are diagnosed per year. Twenty three children and young people are on insulin pumps, with more planned.
The diabetes team would undertake education, support and co-ordinate of management of children, young people and their families with diabetes in hospital, at clinic, in school and at home. Structured education is undertaken on diagnosis and at annual review clinics.
Diabetes clinics are age banded, and currently children are seen 3 times per year (with ongoing support in between clinics), one of these being an annual review. This is delivered as a one stop shop with podiatry examination, and dietary assessment, all children over 12 years also have retinal screening. We are also trying to obtain psychological support for children who may need it.
