Regional guidance

North

The challenge

The northern region spans from the Scottish border, down to North Yorkshire and across to Cumbria, taking in Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire.

The area has a total population of 9.4 million residents and NHS Diabetes is committed to making sure everyone with diabetes in the region has access to the right care and treatment.

NHS Diabetes regional highlights

  • Establishing regional paediatric networks
  • In the North East we are leading on the development of a new diabetes registry for children and young people, we aim to use this to support service improvement, support the paediatric tariff and in the future be the basis of a research data base.
  • We also have two workstreams in the North East on footcare in adult diabetes and an additional workstream on patient education where we are paying particular attention to people who are housebound or are not able to attend a group session – watch this space for future progress.
  • We have commissioned a three year research project called ‘Join Us On Our Journey’, which is being carried out by Leeds Metropolitan University. The work started in 2009 and is in its last year. The aims of the research are to develop and pilot a model of care that will deliver the aspirations of the policy document, ‘Making Every Young Person with Diabetes Matter’ and improve the care provision for children and young people with Type 1 diabetes in England.
