Stakeholder engagement

Important stakeholders

Our stakeholder engagement address books can be used to show the people who might need to be involved in the local commissioning process. These will be updated as roles and responsibilities evolve throughout the transition period

Commissioners:

  • The CEO and local commissioning organisation for all services (PCT /local CCG)
  • Commissioners of GP provider services (PCT / CCGs)
  • Commissioners of non traditional services (NTS) to support self management
  • Local authority / public health / well being board
  • The formal commissioning group for diabetes
  • People with diabetes and those who support them

Providers:

  • Providers of traditional diabetes services
  • GPS and practice nurses and practice managers
  • Specialist diabetes team (Diabetologists, dietitians, nurses, podiatrists, psychologists, service managers)
  • Providers of non traditional diabetes services (NTS)
  • Local authority / public health
  • Third sector and other independent service providers of NTS community services
  • Other expertise:
  • Structured patient education
  • Professional training
  • IT

Approaches to involvement

The local diabetes network will often include many of these stakeholders – who may be heavily involved in advising commissioners already. But they are unlikely to include everyone, or represent all potential views.

User involvement link to user involvement and DPEP

It is critical that the widest possible range of views of services users is obtained.  This may involve surveys, focus groups, attendance at support groups to sample opinion. Ideally local services would be moving towards using specific programmes to support involvement and co-design as one of their priorities for the future itself.

Bringing stakeholders together

This is an ideal time to hold a local event designed specifically to hear as many views as possible and begin to develop a consensus.   This is important even if the organising groups or team already have a fairly clear view of the issues.  There will be others who have been less involved in the planning, but need to be involvedin the implementation.
