Step 2: What standards to you need to achieve?
Before going any further you need to identify the standards your local diabetes service should aspire to, including national quality statements, guidance from NICE or other bodies, current national and local targets as well as best practice. Matching your local needs assessment (Step 3) against these standards will enable you to develop a gap analysis as part of the basis for prioritisation.
Our diabetes intervention diagram is a good starting point. It includes all the components of diabetes care that should be provided, with quality criteria, and is based on the 12 standards in the Diabetes NSF and 13 NICE Quality Standards.
You should also take into account the following:
- The overarching principles of care delivery and organisations
that are necessary to ensure delivery of the components of the diabetes
intervention map in any health community
- Commissioning considerations in delivery
of care to all people with one or more long term condition
- Competency frameworks
- Current national and NHS
Diabetes priorities.
