Research and evaluation

Evaluating the process and perceived impact of the NHS Diabetes Regional Paediatric Diabetes Network Coordinator

August 2010 – October 2011

Background

The role of the Regional Paediatric Diabetes Networks are to support strategic development, to improve clinical outcomes for children with diabetes, and to provide a forum for shared learning for all healthcare professionals caring for children with diabetes. NHS Diabetes has developed a Paediatric Network Coordinator (PNCo) role, and has appointed a PNCo to each geographical region to support the development of the Networks in order to deliver high quality children’s diabetes services in each region.

Aim of the internal evaluation

  • To assess the perceived impact of the Regional Paediatric Diabetes Network Coordinator role in achieving the following objectives within four selected regions:
  1. Development of a strategy that is aligned with national policy and the five strategic priorities of NHS Diabetes
  2. Development of a regional database that feeds into the national register.
  3. A gap analysis of children’s diabetes services across the selected regions.
  4. Evidence of patient and public engagement within the network.
  • To identify barriers and incentives to achieving the local network vision and objectives.
  • To contribute to evidence of the impact that NHS Diabetes makes in terms of delivering the national vision for providing high quality diabetes care that is accessible to children, young people, and their families.

Methodology

A case study approach has been adopted to focus on 4 networks across England (East of England, South Central, North West and North East) to enable a detailed evaluation to be carried out. Data collection comprises a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with the network coordinator at monthly intervals, covering the following topics:

  1. Background, relevant experiences and motivations for undertaking this work.
  2. Role and responsibilities of the post.
  3. PNCo aims and objectives.
  4. Capturing, recording and reporting measures of success.
  5. Key achievements.
  6. Key challenges.
  7. Identifying the most significant thing that has happened since taking on the post.

In addition to the monthly interviews, the PNCo monthly highlight reports are analysed to capture further data and to triangulate evidence from the interviews.

Outputs

An overarching report, in addition to four report regional reports, will summarise the perceived impact of the Regional PNCos to provide evidence for the value of the PNCo role.
