Knowledge and Information Repository

August 2010 – August 2011

Background

Members of NHS Diabetes required a Knowledge and Information Repository (KIR) relating to specific areas of their work to allow easy and quick access to up to date research and policy information. The currently available NHS Evidence resource reportedly has too much information for such purposes. The KIR topics are freely available on the NHS Diabetes website, and can be used by a wider stakeholder group, including clinicians, patients & researchers.

Aim

  • To provide easily accessible summaries of the latest guidance and important research relating to specific key topics of relevance to NHS Diabetes to support and inform members of NHS diabetes when attending meetings and other events.

Methodology

Selection of topic areas

The topic areas were identified by NHS Diabetes staff at a team workshop.

The search process

The literature search focused on research literature from 2000 onwards, published in the UK and internationally, as well as national policy papers. The search strategy focused on NHS Evidence whilst including other specialist libraries. The most relevant and up-to-date research and policy papers were selected for summary. Abstracts were used as a basis for selection or not; however, those research and policy papers selected for inclusion in the list of papers to be summarised were be read and analysed in full.

The summarising process

Each KIR topic includes a brief summary introduction to the topic, followed by a short collection of latest key policy papers, National Body statements, clinical or care guidelines and the latest key research and evaluation papers. All the selected research and policy papers summarised are referenced.

Quality check and validation

To ensure accuracy and completeness, the summary produced for each topic area of the KIR will be quality checked and validated externally by the NHS Evidence Clinical Lead for Diabetes and an expert in the topic field.
