Capturing outcomes from the Safe Use of Insulin e-learning module

March 2011 – October 2011

Background

The NHS Diabetes Safe Use of Insulin e-learning module was developed to support the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) rapid response report. NHS Diabetes commissioned an external provider (Virtual College) to develop and host the module, which was made freely available to all healthcare professionals across England. The e-learning module went live on 16th June 2010; within twelve months 46,459 had registered for the course, and of these 31,627 (68%) had completed the training.

Aims of the evaluation

  • To assess the impact of the Safe Use of Insulin e-learning module.
  • To capture outcome data on changes in confidence levels, working practice, and department/Trust policies/procedures, as a result of completing the course.

Methodology

The NHS Diabetes Research & Evaluation team developed a series of follow up questions to capture changes in confidence and working practice as a result of completing the course, which were validated with a pilot study.

Currently, all those that completed the module between March 2011 and May 2011 are being invited to complete an evaluation survey, three months after they completed the course. The evaluation is sent out via e-mail as a SurveyMonkey link, and is collecting both quantitative and qualitative data.

Outputs

An overarching report, along with supporting case studies, will summarise the impact of the e-learning module, and highlight changes in confidence levels and working practice as a result of completing the course.
