People with diabetes
The ultimate aim of NHS Diabetes is to ensure every person with diabetes receives a high quality level of care. We work to achieve this by supporting healthcare professionals improve the service they offer. In partnership with people with diabetes, we help develop and support new guidelines, standards and systems designed to improve care for people, and then encourage the widespread implementation of these new initiatives.
One major programme we are currently involved in is called the ‘Year of Care’ which enables more choice and personalised care. It focuses on meeting the needs of the individual at any stage of their life by transforming the annual review for a person with diabetes from what is quite often just a tick-the-box exercise into a genuinely collaborative consultation, from which a care plan to meet their individual wishes and needs is jointly agreed with their healthcare professional. For more information, email yearofcare@diabetes.org.uk.
A key ethos behind all of our work is to involve people with diabetes. We do this because we recognise that proper service improvement can only be made if the views of the people that matter are taken on board.
We involve people with diabetes in two key ways; by making them an integral part of the steering groups for our major projects and work areas, and by encouraging those commissioning, designing and providing diabetes services across England to engage with those receiving services. Both these approaches ensure that diabetes service development and delivery at all levels reflects the real needs of people. (User Involvement)
We also work in partnership with a number of organisations and charities that support people affected by diabetes on a wide range of projects and programmes. One of our key partners is the UK's largest diabetes charity - Diabetes UK (DUK), their support and services can be accessed at: www.diabetes.org.uk.
